The team here at Kayak for a Cure™ always gets excited when we get a call from a rockstar volunteer who wants to start a Kayak for a Cure™ event in their city and it was no different for Mississauga, Ontario.  When Virginia Martin called us, we knew right away that the Kayak for a Cure™ leadership would grow by one. It’s important to note that Kayak for a Cure™ is a passion project for everyone involved – top to bottom. There isn’t an individual on staff here at the organization that earns an honorarium, so it’s a very special thing when a local kayaker calls to lead a charity kayak event with us!

Kayak for a Cure - Charity Kayak Event - Mississauga 2009

Having said that, Virginia and the Kayak for a Cure™ Mississauga volunteer team lived up to the challenge, raising nearly $5,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society while having a fantastic time with family and friends on the water. Check out the Mississauga event photos and recap below and, on behalf of all of us at Kayak for a Cure™ – CONGRATULATIONS!

On a cool sunny September morning, volunteers and paddlers trickled into the park one by one. After the tent and banner set up and greetings were shared, coffee was enjoyed and speaches said it was about time to lauch the very first Kayak for a Cure in Ontario. Before today, these amazing paddlers, with the support of their amazing family and friends, were able to raise an incredible $4900, 95% of their fund raising goal, in support of Cancer Society in Ontario.

As boats were launched, smiles were abundant and paddlers eager to start up the celebratory paddling tour to Port Credit Harbour and north up the Credit River. Upon their return a lunch was enjoyed and prizes given out.

Special thanks to the host committee members and paddlers and all those that made donations in cash and in time to make this day happen. Also thanks to Learn to Kayak for supplying rental boats and their generous donation. Also local merchants that donated, Starbucks and Loblaws in Port Credit, Metro at Lakeshore and Southdown and Micheal-Angelo’s on Erinmills Pkwy. Thank you for all of your support!
We look forward to seeing you again in Sept 2010!

Post paddle note: Thanks to some late donations we were able to reach our $5000 goal. Whoo Hoo!
